We have all been there—standing in the middle of a situation that feels completely broken, unfair, or entirely out of our control. In those moments, it is easy to ask, “Why is this happening to me?” or wonder if God has forgotten us in the dark.
But one of the most powerful realities of the Christian life is that God specializes in taking what was meant to destroy you and using it to develop you. He is an expert at rewriting stories. No matter how messy your current chapter looks, the overarching promise over your life remains clear: He will turn it for good.
If you are navigating an unexpected trial, a painful disappointment, or a season of waiting, here are three anchoring truths to hold onto.
1. The Principle of Genesis 50:20
To understand how God transforms our pain, we have to look at the life of Joseph. He was betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and forgotten in a dungeon for years. From a human perspective, his life looked like a series of uninterrupted tragedies.
Yet, when he finally stood before the very brothers who tried to destroy him, Joseph didn’t speak from a place of bitterness. Instead, he uttered one of the most profound truths in scripture:
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” (Genesis 50:20)
People might intend to hurt you. Circumstances might bring unfair pain. But their intentions do not get the final word in your life—God’s intentions do. He takes the very weapons formed against you and reshapes them into stepping stones for your destiny.
2. The Frame of Romans 8:28
When we are in the middle of a storm, it is hard to see the big picture. We only see the broken pieces. But the Apostle Paul reminds us in Romans 8:28:
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Notice it doesn’t say all things are good. Sickness, betrayal, loss, and heartbreak are inherently painful and bad. However, the promise is that God is actively working through those things. Like a master weaver taking dark, rough threads and integrating them with bright ones, He is crafting a beautiful tapestry. Your current struggle is not the destination; it is just the raw material God is using to build your testimony.
3. Trusting the Process in the Pivot
How do we walk out this truth day by day?
-
Surrender Your Timeline: Breakthrough rarely happens overnight. Joseph spent over a decade in waiting and testing before he reached the palace. Trust that God’s delays are not His denials; they are His preparations.
-
Guard Your Heart Against Bitterness: If Joseph had consumed himself with revenge, he wouldn’t have been spiritually ready to lead a nation. Keep your heart pure and let God handle your critics.
-
Keep Looking Forward: The enemy wants you to focus on the pain of what you lost. God wants you to focus on the purpose of what you are gaining.
Your Trial is Becoming Your Testimony
The very thing that is causing you tears today can become the source of your greatest strength tomorrow. If you are in a dark room right now, take a deep breath and remind yourself: The story isn’t over yet.
What the enemy meant for evil, what the world meant for harm, and what felt like a dead end is currently being turned around by the Almighty. Hold onto your faith, keep your eyes on the Savior, and watch how He turns it all around for your good and His ultimate glory.
