We all hit seasons in life where circumstances feel completely overwhelming. You look around, and the things you depended on—financial stability, health, personal relationships, or career security—seem to be drying up. When life strips away your safety nets, where do you find the strength to keep moving forward?

In scripture, the prophet Habakkuk faced a similar crisis. Looking at a nation in turmoil and facing impending hardship, he reached a powerful conclusion that remains a beacon of hope for anyone walking through a dark valley:

“The LORD God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, and He will make me walk on my high hills.”Habakkuk 3:19

This passage reveals how God transforms our deepest struggles into spiritual ground where we can stand firm, leap over obstacles, and rise higher than our difficulties.

1. When Earthly Sources Fail, God Remains Your Strength

In Habakkuk 3:17-18, the prophet paints a picture of complete economic and physical devastation: the fig tree doesn’t blossom, the vines produce no fruit, the olive crop fails, and the fields yield no food. Yet, in the very next breath, he declares: “Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.”

Most people anchor their joy and strength in what they have:

  • A stable bank account

  • Good physical health

  • Positive circumstances and supportive surroundings

But when those earthly provisions fail, human strength collapses.

Habakkuk learned to anchor his strength not in what he had, but in Who he belonged to. True spiritual strength isn’t about ignoring reality; it is choosing to rely on Yahweh—the unchanging “I AM”—when every external security is gone. When you make God your personal strength, your peace is no longer dependent on your environment.

2. Feet Like Deer’s Feet: Surefootedness in Dangerous Places

Habakkuk uses a striking metaphor to describe what happens when God becomes your strength: “He will make my feet like deer’s feet.”

Mountain deer (or hinds) are remarkable creatures. They navigate steep, jagged cliffs and narrow mountain edges without slipping or falling. How?

  • Precision and Agility: A deer’s back hooves land in the exact spot where its front hooves just tread.

  • Equipped for Difficulty: God designed their hooves specifically for rugged, treacherous terrain.

When you go through seasons of trouble, God doesn’t always instantly remove the mountain. Instead, He equips your feet for the climb. He gives you the grace, stability, and spiritual surefootedness to walk through complex, high-stress situations without stumbling into fear, panic, or compromise.

3. Walking Upon the High Places

Notice the phrasing in Habakkuk 3:19: He enables us to “walk on high places.”

In the natural world, high places represent spots of elevation, visibility, and safety from predators below. In a spiritual sense, walking on “high places” means:

  • Rising Above the Storm: Seeing your circumstances from God’s heavenly perspective rather than being trapped by the chaos on the ground.

  • Overcoming Fear: Moving from a state of paralysis and terror to active, confident progress.

  • Gaining Spiritual Victory: Treading over spiritual battles, burdens, and responsibilities with divine authority.

The valley may be where the crisis hits, but God’s strength is designed to lift your soul into the high places of His presence, peace, and victory.

How to Lean on God’s Strength Today

If you feel weary, overwhelmed, or uncertain about the path ahead, step into these practical actions:

  1. Shift Your Focus from the Problem to the Provider: Acknowledge the hardship, but spend more time meditating on God’s character than staring at the difficulty.

  2. Declare God’s Word Daily: When weakness sets in, speak Habakkuk 3:19 and Psalm 18:33 over your life. Reaffirm that your strength comes from the Lord.

  3. Praise Before You See the Change: Like Habakkuk, choose to rejoice in God before the crops grow or the situation resolves. Worship breaks the spirit of heaviness.

A Prayer for Strength and Guidance

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You are my refuge and my eternal strength. When my human energy fails and my circumstances feel treacherous, I choose to place my trust in You.

Lord, make my feet like deer’s feet today. Give me the surefootedness to navigate every cliff, trial, and challenge without slipping into despair or fear. Lift my head above the daily noise and enable me to walk on the high places of Your peace and purpose.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
