Isaiah 1:8-14

8 The Daughter of Zion is left

like a shelter in a vineyard,

like a hut in a field of melons,

like a city under siege.

Lord called us to be blessed and to be a blessing. His people are to live like Him. Lord who still loves sinner but hates sin. He had to punish the sinner, so we will be separated from sin and sin needed a payment that’s judgement. Lord punished Jesus on cross so we will be saved from sins. Isa 53:10 “But the LORD was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief”. It pleased God to crush Jesus in our place, still when we live like the worldly people, remember Heb 10:26 “If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left”

Here is an example, Israel rejected God; God’s city Jerusalem is compared to its state when Isaiah was prophesying. Like a tent when you are supposed to be the branch of the vine Jesus (John 15:5 “I am the Vine; you are the branches”). Like a hut where you are supposed to have fruit (Gal 5:22 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control;”). You are called to be a city of God (Math 5:15 “A city on a hill cannot be hidden”), now it surrounded by enemies. Oh are you surrounded with troubles, is it result of Lord’s punishment

9 Unless the LORD Almighty

had left us some survivors,

we would have become like Sodom,

we would have been like Gomorrah.

Still Lord was so merciful to keep a remnant for Himself. When David fell into Adultery, David started Ps 51:1 “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion” His unfailing love is still so deep to pick us out of the deepest pit when we seek His mercy. When we plead His compassion consumes our sin and pain.

10 Hear the word of the LORD,

you rulers of Sodom;

listen to the law of our God,

you people of Gomorrah!

Lord is fuming at the deeds to His people and are addressing them as rulers of Sodom (God’ enemies – city destroyed by fire) so next they are in line to be consumed by fire. Heb 10:31 “It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Just before pouring out His anger, Lord is calling out through His prophet. You people of Gomorrah (city full of sin) LISTEN. Once door is shut, Oh Lord let none fall outside.

11 “The multitude of your sacrifices—

what are they to me?” says the LORD.

Israelites did great number of sacrifices. Never will we be justified by the number of times we went to worship. Unless you confess with broken heart and take strong commitment of not to defile yourself (Dan 1:8 Daniel decided not to defile himself), all your prayers and worships will not be accepted by God if you are superfical.

2 Cor 13:5 “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves” Never get into the presence of Almighty without examining, Jesus said Mat 5:23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you”, go and confess first. Always examine and remember before you get into worship.

“I have more than enough of burnt offerings,

of rams and the fat of fattened animals;

I have no pleasure

in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.

Lord does not need your money or even your praises. Bible says Lord was pleased with Abel and His offering. Samuel said obedience is better than sacrifices. Paul asks us to be cheerful givers. Lord needs you, when we give ourselves, He could use what we give for His glory, when we surrender. Praise from a pure heart is powerful.

12 When you come to appear before me,

who has asked this of you,

this trampling of my courts?

Lord does not like even His so called people entering His presence with stubborn heart. Unwillingness to deny evil, Lord is telling who asked you to step into my place. Lord does not desire your presence; remember the words Jesus said ‘Away with you I do not know you’. Why are we still taking grace lightly and sin as if it is normal. Where is the fear of God? Lord is asking; with this attitude do not step into His sacred place. Paul said many of you are sick and dead because you took the sacrament carelessly (1 Cor 11:30 “That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep”).

13 Stop bringing meaningless offerings!

Your incense is detestable to me.

Offerings can be meaningless; Praises can be detestable to God. It is not the action but the heart behind it that Lord values. Do you really mean what you profess? Do you worship with emotions alone or do you fall face down at His awesome presence, for He is so great.

Remember Israel sinned during Samuel time and thought Ark could save 1 Sam 4:5 “When the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.” But verse 10, that day enemies killed 30000. It is not in deeds but Lord see the decisions, delights and desire behind the deeds.

New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations—

I cannot bear your evil assemblies.

Lord is not able to stand the presence of His people’s offering and praises who are sinful. Amos 5:21,22 “I hate, I reject your festivals, Nor do I delight in your solemn assemblies.Even though you offer up to Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept them; And I will not even look at the peace offerings” Why are you continuing in sin ? Why are you taking sin lightly? Why take grace for granted? Lord does not want to see you or see your offering, how fearful? Where do we stand?

14 Your New Moon festivals and your appointed feasts

my soul hates.

They have become a burden to me;

I am weary of bearing them.

When you set appointed time, Lord hates those. Are we diluting the truth by looking and saying only of His compassion, He pours out compassion tothose who look out for it. When you forsake Him, He is God who judges. Who can stand His wrath? If heaven is heaven because of God’s presence, hell is hell because of wrath of God. My dear it is a very terrible thing to fall into the angry hand of the Lord.
