Rehoboam's foolishness splits Israel

Rehoboam's foolishness splits Israel - Morning Devotion 29 August 2022

by Pastor Solomon Kings | Morning Devotion

The smartest fool who ever lived was Solomon. At first, his life had been pleasant. In the end, he failed. Whatever level of wisdom he possessed or how many chapters of the Bible he wrote and gave to us to read, his life was a failure. He strayed from the god’s path by worshiping idols and being married to many women. So in our life as well it matters how our lives begin as well as how they turn out in end, and most importantly, there shouldn’t be failures.

1 Kings 11:43 And Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David, his father. And Rehoboam, his son, reigned in his place. Following his coronation, Israelites approached him and begged him to lower the tax because his father, Solomon, had waived extremely high taxes on everything and they were unable to pay it.

1 Kings 12:6 Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was still alive. It is always advisable to take the advice of elderly people because they have the most experience and knowledge and should never be disregarded. However, as stated in 1 Kings 12:8, he later abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him. He made a mistake by choosing to heed the advice of a youngster, and the fallout was severe. One bad choice caused Israel to split in half, in 1 Kings 12:16. indicates that whereas Solomon had a high level of intelligence and wisdom, his son had none.

It is written in Proverbs 18:7 The mouths of fools are their undoing, and their lips are a snare to their very lives. In a manner similar to this, Rehoboam’s foolishness divided Israel in two. Hence, what we say and our actions are crucial. We should pray to God in order to grant us the ability to speak appropriately in all situations.

The knowledge of Rehoboam did not act similar to the advice given in Proverbs 4:6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you. Similarly, Proverbs 4:8 says, if we cherish wisdom, she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. In Proverbs 9:11, for through wisdom, your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. Again in Proverbs 19:8, the one who gets wisdom loves life; the one who cherishes understanding will soon prosper.

Rehoboam divided the nation of Israel during his reign as king due to his false wisdom, disregard for the counsel of the elders, and consultation with the wrong people. So whom should we consult with regard to our future plans? It is from God and God’s people, which is incredibly significant. God will lead us in his presence since his wisdom is the finest, which will enable us to live successful lives rather than failed life like Rehoboam.
